the jar has a solar cell on top that collects light during the day, as well as a light sensor so it only turns on when it's dark. there is also an off switch to turn it off when you want to.

I love this product. These ingenious little devices are a throwback to yesteryear: a time when people stored just about everything that was perishable in mason jars and put them on the windowsill.
